CALL & PRAYER OF RECONCILIATION

Nick: Often, we overlook the daily provision we’ve received

and choose instead to focus on things we do not yet have.

Let us confess our sins of ingratitude and greed together.

God of abundance,

we confess we overlook your daily provision.

We take your gifts for granted,

longing for what we do not have instead of treasuring what we do.

Our hearts are often filled with envy,

and our desires pull us away from gratitude.

Forgive us, O God.

Open our eyes to your faithfulness

and teach us to live with contentment and thanksgiving.

We trust that you provide all we truly need. Amen

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Penny: Brothers and sisters, hear this good news: Our compassionate God is faithful to pardon our sins and will set us on the paths of gratitude and generosity. Receive forgiveness and be at peace.

OPENING PRAYER

God our daily provider,

you call us into community, banish our emptiness,

and meet us in ordinary things like our daily bread.

As we gather in worship,

open our hearts to your voice and our hands to your provision.

Teach us to trust in your abundance,

to share what we have,

and to pray boldly: “Give us this day our daily bread.”

May this time of worship nourish us with your truth

and prepare us to share your love in the world.

In Christ’s name, we pray.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

John: God, may the scriptures we read today become living bread.

May your Spirit empower them to shape us in Jesus’ likeness.

Give us wisdom as we interpret these words of scripture; may they nourish our minds and souls.

Amen.

A reading from the book of Jonah.  Cathy W.

THE WORD OF YHWH CAME TO JONAH BEN-Amittai:

"Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh right now. Raise a cry against it! tell them that i know all about their crimes."

But Jonah decided to run away from Yahweh and set out for Tarshish instead. he went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. he paid the fare and boarded the ship bound for Tarshish, in order to get away from Yahweh

But Yahweh unleashed a violent wind on the sea, and the storm was so great that it threatened to break up the ship.  the frightened sailors, every one of them, appealed to their gods. then they threw the cargo overboard to lighten the ship. Jonah, however, went below, laid down in the hold, and fell fast asleep. The captain found Jonah and said, "how can you sleep at a time like this? Get up! call on your god! maybe your god will spare a thought for us, and not leave us to die."

7 The crew, meanwhile, said to one another, "come on, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for bringing this evil on us." 8 so they cast lots, and the lot fell to Jonah. 8 so they said to him, "You have brought all this misfortune on us! …What are we to do with you to make the sea grow calm for us? Jonah replied, “Take me and throw me into the sea and then it will grow calm for you.” Taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea and the sea grew calm once more.

Then Yahweh sent a huge fish to swallow Jonah and he remained in the fish’s belly for three days and nights. (Jonah prayed fervently to God), then God spoke to the fish and the fish spit Jonah onto the shore.

The Word of God.   R] Thanks be to God.

A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians (Judy)

I want you to remember this: our ancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; all of them were baptized into Moses.

All ate the same spiritual food. All drank the same spiritual drink – they drank from the rock that was following them, and that rock was Christ.

You are not to grumble as some of them did, for which they were killed by the destroying angel These things that happened to them serve as an example and have been written as a warning to us, upon whom the end of the ages has come. For all these reasons, let those who think they are standing upright watch out lest they fall!

A reading from Scripture. R] Thanks be to God

Gospel   Luke 13: 1-9

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

Jesus told this parable: "There was a fig tree growing in a vineyard. The owner came out looking for fruit on it, but did not find any.

The owner said to the vinedresser, 'Look here! For three years now I have come out in search of fruit on this fig tree and found none. Cut it down. Why should it clutter up the ground?'

"In reply, the vine dresser said, 'Please leave it one more year while I hoe around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine; if not, then let it be cut down.’

The Gospel of Jesus.    R] Glory and praise to you, Jesus, the Christ!

Homily

We believe that when we break bread together we experience a glimpse of God’s feast of love,

which is available to everyone.

Prayers of the Community  Galen

As we prepare for the sacred meal, we are aware that just as Jesus is anointed, so is each of us. We bring to this table our blessings, cares and concerns.  Please feel free to voice your prayers beginning with the words “I bring to the table….”

We pray for these and all unspoken concerns. Amen.

Cathy P: Sisters and brothers in Christ, the table is set for you.

God so loved the whole world that God sent Jesus to feed us all.

God freely gives us love and life

so we might freely give love and life to others.

If you are hungry, tired, weary, or worn,

there is space for you here.

Come, the bread of life and the cup of blessing await you.

 Marita: God, our great provider,

we thank you for the gift of Jesus.

We thank you for the bread of life who nourishes and sustains us.

As we eat this bread, we remember you provide for all people,

feeding the world with your love and peace.

Juanita: This simple meal reminds us that your abundant mercy

draws us closer to you and to one another.

May we be strengthened by your presence

so we might share your love and justice

with those who are physically and spiritually hungry.

Thank you for this sacred moment and for the eternal nourishment you offer through Christ, our bread of life.

Gerry:We gather at this table in remembrance of Christ,

alongside disciples old and young, from every walk of life.

We are confident that through Jesus Christ,

we are all nourished and made whole.

Penny  As God's Divine Spark and energy are in each one of us, please extend your gifts as we pray:

Penny: Loving God, intensify the presence of Your Spirit in these our gifts, as they, and we, become the Body and Blood of Jesus the Christ for our wholeness and the wholeness of all creation.

We remember that while sharing a feast at table, Jesus bent down and washed his disciples' feet - reminding them of the need to serve all.

He then took bread and blessed you, God of all Good Gifts. Jesus then broke the bread, shared it among his friends, and said:

All: Take this all of you and eat, this is my body which is given for you.

Then Jesus took a cup of wine. He gave thanks and shared the cup with his friends, saying:

All: Take this all of you and drink from it; this is the cup of my life blood. In prophetic solidarity, it is poured out for you and for all. Sustain one another in the power of sacred memory.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: R]Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Cathy P: Beloved God, through this sacred meal, may we become instruments of Your healing, love and grace. May we know Your love more intimately and be transformed to share it more abundantly.

R]: Amen.

Juanita: In Your presence Triune God, through whom all goodness flows, we join with all of creation to give You glory and honor:

R]: Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

may all glory and honor be Yours all-loving God, forever and ever.

Amen.

Pat: Let us pray as Jesus taught us:

Holy One, who is within, around and among us,

We celebrate your many names.

Your Wisdom come.

Your will be done, unfolding from the depths within us,

Each day you give us all we need;

You remind us of our limits, and we let go.

You support us in our power, and we act with courage.

For you are the dwelling place within us,

the empowerment around us

and the celebration among us, now and forever.  Amen

(Miriam Therese Winter)
