17th Sunday on Ordinary Times

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

  Responder: Marita

Greetings:  Kathy W

On July 26th in the Catholic Church, the memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Grandparents of Jesus is celebrated.

Key details about Saints Joachim and Anne:

Parents of Mary: They are traditionally recognized as the mother and father of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Patron Saints: They are considered the patron saints of grandparents, mothers, married couples, and childless couples.

Tradition and Significance: Although not mentioned in the Bible, information about their lives comes from non-biblical sources, like the Protoevangelium of James. These traditions describe them as devout, long-suffering, and eventually blessed with the birth of Mary. Their lives are seen as role models of faith and devotion.

Opening

In the name of God our Creator, Jesus our Brother and Sophia Spirit. R: Amen.

Forgiveness Rite

Presider: We ask for the grace to continually acknowledge our need to grow in goodness, peace, and caring for ourselves and others.

R:  We accept God’s love and forgiveness for the fragility of our human nature.

Presider: We confess to Almighty God and to each other that we love God. Mixed into every thought and word, in every action and inaction is a belief that God is there, loving us through my faults, through my successes, and through my stillness. Therefore, I ask blessed Mary, all the Angels and Saints, and each other to pray that none of us ever forgets the love of our gracious God. (adapted by Therese Fisher)

Opening Prayer  Presider

Abba God you are all-powerful, your gifts of love are countless and your goodness infinite as we come before you on this day of thanksgiving for Grandparents. We pray with gratitude for their kindness.  Open our hearts so we will have loving kindness for every man, woman, and child.  We promise to serve as your hands and feet sharing for all we encounter.

Opening for the Readings Kathy N.

As we begin the Liturgy of the Word let us open our hearts to ways scripture might speak to us.

First Reading  Genesis 18:20-32  Kathy N

A reading from the book of Genesis.

So YHWH said to Abraham, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is terrible, and their sin is so grave that I must go down and see for myself. If they have done what her cry against them accuse them of, I will destroy them. If not, I need to know that, too.” While the travelers walked along toward Sodom, Abraham remained in YHWH’s presence. Then Abraham drew closer and said, “Will you sweep away the innocent with the guilty? Suppose there were fifty innocent people in the city; would you wipe out the place, rather than spare it for the sake of the fifty innocents within it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to make the innocent die with the guilty!  Abraham went on, “Since I have thus dared to speak to my Sovereign, what if there are no more than twenty?” “For the sake of the twenty, I will not destroy it,” YHWH answered.  Abraham persisted: “Please, do not be angry if I speak up this last time. What if there are only ten there?” “For the sake of the ten,” YHWH replied, “I will not destroy it.”

The Word of God.    R. Thanks be to God!

Psalm 138   Gina

I give You thanks, O Blessed one, with my whole heart; before all the people I sing your praise; I was humbled when I came to see that You dwell in me, in the Sacred Chapel of all souls; my gratitude knows no bounds! For You are the Holy One the Life of our life. On the day that I called, You answered me; the strength of my soul You increased.

All leaders of the earth shall one day praise you,; When your spirit Awakens in every heart; And they shall proclaim the new dawn of Light and Love.  Great will be the radiation of your Glory!  Even as You are the Most High, You are a friend to the lowly: the arrogant close their hearts to your love and guidance.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You preserve my life; you are a very Presence as I face my fears and doubts; Your strength upholds me. You guide me as I pray to fulfill my purpose on earth; You do not forsake those who call upon You. Your steadfast Love and Truth endures forever.

(by Nan C. Merrill)

Second Reading  Colossians 2:12-14  Pat

A reading from the letter of Paul to the Colossians.

In baptism you were not only buried with Christ but also raised to life, because you believed in the power of God who raised Christ from the dead. And though you were dead in sin and did not have the Covenant, God gave you new life in company with Christ, pardoning all our sins. God has canceled the massive debt that stood against us with all its hostile claims, taking it out of the way and nailing it to the cross.

The Word of God.   R. Thanks be to God!

Gospel Reading Luke:11:1-13  Nick

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

One day Jesus was praying, and when he had finished, one of the disciples asked, Rabbi, teach us to pray, just as John taught is disciples.” Jesus said to them, “When you pray, say, ‘Abba God, hallowed be your Name! May your reign come. Give us today Our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we too forgive everyone who sins against us; and do not let us be subjected to the Test.’” Jesus said to them: “Suppose one of you has friend, a neighbor, and you go to your neighbor at  midnight and say, ‘Lend me three loaves, because friends of mine on a journey have come to me, and I have nothing to set before them.’ “Then your neighbor says, ‘Leave me alone. The door is already locked, and the children and I are in bed. I cannot get up to look after your needs.’ I tell you, though your neighbor will not get up to give you the bread out of friendship, your persistence will make your neighbor get up and give you as much as you need. “That is why I tell you, keep asking and you will receive; keep looking and you will find; keep knocking and the door will be opened to you. For whoever asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds; whoever knocks, is admitted. What parents among you will give a snake to their child when the child asks for a fish, or a scorpion when the child asks for an egg? If you, with all your sins, know how to give your children good things, how much more of Wisdom Spirit will Abba give to those who ask.

The Good News of Salvation!

R. Glory and praise to our Savior Jesus Christ!

After Communion

Pat: We pray for all of us gathered here, and like Jesus, we open ourselves up to your Spirit, for it is through living as he lived that we awaken to your Spirit within, moving us to glorify you, at this time and always. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer:  Chris

Let us pray as Jesus taught us

Holy One, you are within, around, and among us.

We celebrate your many names.

Your wisdom come, your will be done,

unfolding from the depths within us.

Each day, You give us all that we need.

You remind us of our limits, and we let go.

You support us in our powerlessness, and we act

with courage.

For You are dwelling within us,

the empowerment around us,

and the celebration among us,

now and forever, amen.

 Adapted by Miriam Therese Winter

Penny: Come, Holy Spirit enflame once more the dying embers of our weariness. Shake up our complacency. Whisper our names once more and scatter your gifts of grace with wild abandon. Break open the prisons of our inner being and let your raging justice be our liberty.

Final Blessing

Presider: Please extend your hands as we bless each other.  May we truly be Jesus’s disciples, living in joy and love. May we walk together as we support and tend to one another and all creation. Let us o so in the name of the Creator, Jesus and Wisdom Spirit. Amen

Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.

P: Kyrie:

Gracious God, you bring pardon and peace to your

people,God have mercy  R] God have mercy

Christ have mercy R] Christ, have mercy

Gracious God, you call us by name, and show us the

way to you,

God have mercy  R] God have mercy

P: Opening Prayer

In the midst of the many demands made on us,

Brother Jesus, help us to recognize the “better part”.

May we seek to love rather than seek to be loved. May

we live lives of integrity rather than accommodation

and find joy in giving rather than taking. May we find

fulfillment in being a part of rather than in control.

In the noise around us, may we hear your voice; in the

challenges we face, may we seek your light; in the

chasms that divide us, may we seek your healing.

R] Amen

First reading: Rita

A reading from the book of Genesis 18:1

Our God appeared to Abraham by the oak grove of

Mame, while Abraham sat at the entrance to his tent

in the heat of the day.

Looking up, Abraham saw three travelers standing

nearby. When he saw them, Abraham ran from the

entrance of the tent to greet them; and bowing to

the ground, said: "If I may ask you this favor please

do not pass by our tent. Let some water be brought,

that you may bathe your feet, and then rest

yourselves beneath this tree."As you have come to

your faithful one, let me bring you a little food, that

you may refresh yourselves. Afterward you  may go on

your way." "Very well," they replied, "do as you have

said."Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said,

"Quick - take three sheaves of fine flour and knead it

into loaves of bread." Abraham then ran to the herd,

selected a choice and tender steer, and sent a worker

hurrying to prepare it. Then Abraham took cheese and

milk and the steer that had been prepared and placed

it before the travelers; and he waited on them under

the tree while they ate."Where is Sarah?" they asked.

"There in the tent," Abraham replied. One of them

said, "I will return to you at this time next year. Sarah

 will then have a child.

The Word of God    R: Thanks be to God

Responsorial psalm 15 Gina

Response: Those who act justly will live in the

presence of God.

1.Those whose way of life is blameless, who always

do what is right. Those speak the truth from their

heart whose tongue is not used for slander.

2.  Who do no wrong to friends, cast no discredit on

neighbors, who look with contempt on the reprobate,

but honor those who fear You.

3.  Who do not ask interest on loans and cannot be

bribed to exploit the innocent. If they do all this,

 nothing can shake them.

Second Reading: Janet

A reading from the letter of Paul to the

Colossians.

Even now I find my joy in the suffering I endure for

you. In my own body I fill up what is lacking in the

sufferings of Jesus, for the sake of Christ's body, the

church. I became a minister of this church through

the commission God gave me, to preach among you

the word in its fullness — that mystery hidden from

ages and generations past but now revealed to God's

holy ones. God's will was to make known to them the

priceless glory that this mystery brings to the nations

— the mystery of Christ in you, your hope of glory.

This is the Christ we proclaim while we admonish

everyone and teach them in the full measure of

wisdom, hoping to make everyone complete in our

 Savior.

Gospel

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke 10:38-42: Nick

Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha

welcomed him to her home. She had a sister named

Mary, who seated herself at Jesus' feet and listened to

his words. Martha, who was busy with all the details of

hospitality, came to Jesus and said, "Rabbi, are you

not concerned that my sister has left me all alone to

do the household tasks? Tell her to help me!" Jesus

replied, "Martha, Martha! You are anxious and upset

about so many things, but only a few things are

necessary — really only one. Mary has chosen the

better part, and she will not be deprived of it.The

Gospel of Jesus, the Christ.   R: Praise to Jesus the

Christ!

peace I leave you. My peace I give you.” We ask you

to look on the faith of those gathered here. Give us

your peace, and spread your peace throughout the

world, always and forever.

May the peace of Christ be always with you. R] And

also with you

Please off each other the sign of peace

Introduction to petitions: Galen

With faith in God’s desire to work with us in the

building of God’s reign on Earth we bring our prayers:

For what or whom shall we pray?

(At conclusion of petitions)

Most loving God, please hear and answer the prayers

we have brought before you, as well as those which

remain in our hearts, unspoken. We also pray for those

who have no one else to pray for them, and we do this

in Jesus’ name. Amen

Offering of Gifts

John: Blessed are you, God of all creation! Through

your goodness we have this bread to offer. Fruit of the

Earth, work of human hands, it will become for us the

bread of life.

R] Blessed be God forever

Barbara: Blessed are you, God of all creation! Through your

goodness we have this wine to offer. Fruit of the vine,

and work of human hands, it will become for us

the cup of life.

R: Blessed be God forever

Pat: Pray sisters and brothers that our offering may

be acceptable to our loving God.

R: May God accept this offering from our hands for the

praise and glory of God’s name. For our good and the

good of all God’s people.

Presider: May God be with you

R] And also with you

P: Lift up your hearts!

R] We lift them up to the Lord

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

R] It is right and just.

Gerry: Wise and faithful God, you have birthed us

in goodness, gifted us with life and cherished us

 in love. In the heart of our being, your Spirit dwells;

a Spirit of courage and vision, a Spirit of wisdom

 and truth.

Therese: Sending among us Jesus, our Savior, you

 birth afresh

in our world the power of Sophia-Wisdom, and in the

gift of the Spirit, your creative goodness blooms anew

amid the variety and wonder of life.

Rita: In the power of that same Spirit, we lift our

hearts in prayer, invoking anew the gift of wisdom and

enlightenment, that we may continue to praise and

thank you, in union with all who sing the ancient

hymn of praise:

R:Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts!

The heavens and Earth are full of Your glory! Blessed

is the one who comes in the name of our God.

 Hosanna in the highest!

Penny: We give thanks for the Creative Presence that

began and sustains all that exists. We recognize that

human life gives this Creator Spirit a particular way of

coming to expression, and that in us the Spirit

can sing and dance, speak and write, love and create.

Presider: Conscious that we live, move, and have our

being inhis Spirit, we give thanks for people through

history who have affirmed this loving presence in all

people and who have challenged people to give

witness to this by lives characterized by mercy,

 gratitude, compassion, generosity, and forgiveness.

Karla: We give thanks for Jesus of Nazareth, who loved so

greatly and taught so clearly and courageously.

He was able to set people free from images and ideas

and religious practices that bound them into fear and

a false sense of separation from the Source of all life

 and from one another.

Presider: Through Jesus we have learned how our

loving is a sharing in the life of the Spirit. In Jesus we

see the Spirit of Life challenging all of us to make Her

presence on Earth more visible. We call upon this

same Holy Spirit to transform our simple gifts of

bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus.

Presider: We remember that at the last Passover

Jesus celebrated with his family and disciples

he gathered with them around the table. Before the

meal began, he went among them to as servant

washing their feet, touching their hearts.

When he returned to his place at the table, he lifted

the bread, spoke the blessing, broke the bread and

 offered it to them saying:

All:  Take this, all of you, and eat, for this is my body which is for you.

Presider: At the end of the meal,he lifted the cup,

praised you for your goodness, and shared the cup

 with these words:

All: “Take this, all of you, and drink: this is the cup of my blood, the cup of the new and everlasting covenant. Do this in memory of me.”

Karla: We pray for all who allow the mind and heart

and spirit of Jesus to motivate their actions. We pray

that Christian leadership may be open and affirming,

creative and challenging. We pray that all Christians

might better recognize, acknowledge, and acclaim the

Creative Spirit's presence in all people, always and in

 all places.

We rejoice in the giftedness of each person here.

Karen: We are grateful for who we are for each other.

We consider ourselves blessed in and by the Creative

 Spirit.

May we be truly eucharistic in all we do.

To this prayer we give our Amen.

Galen: For ourselves gathered here we ask the grace

to be who and what we ritualize here: the "body of

Christ," people committed by our "Amen"

to allowing this Spirit to move freely in our lives.

We give thanks that we have gathered here as the

 body of Christ.

Gina: For it is through him, with him and in him that

we give give glory and praise to the Holy One forever

 and ever.

Pat: Let us pray with the words that Jesus gave us:

Our Beloved who is everywhere, be Holy you

name. Let your sovereign counsel be known. Let

your will be done on Earth as it is throughout the

universe. Provide for us our needs each day

and forgive us our offenses even as we have forgiven

our offenders. Do not let us enter into temptation but

deliver us from the evil one. From you is born all

ruling will, the power and the life; the song that

beautifies all. From age to age it renews.

Amen.

Penny: Behold, this is the Lamb of God who invites us

to this table to grace us with God’s presence and

provide sustenance for our journey. How blessed are

we who are called to the table of our God!

R: Jesus, you make us worthy to receive you. By your

word and presence, we are healed.
