The Basilica of St. John Lateran is named for the Lateran hill on which it stands. The cathedral church of Rome is dedicated to both John the Baptist and John the Evangelist and stands as a symbol of the persistence of the entire church. It was dedicated in 324 AD soon after Emperor Constantine allowed christians to meet without persecutions.

Margaret: Opening Prayer: Adapted by John Philip Newell
Holy One,
You dwell not in temples made by human hands, but in the living temple of Your people, the Church.
As we celebrate the dedication of the Lateran Basilica, the mother and head of all churches of Rome and of the world, renew in us the gift of Your Spirit.
Clear our heart, O God,
that we may see you.
Clear our heart, O God,
that we may truly see ourselves.
Clear our heart, O God,
that we may know the sacredness of this moment
and in every moment
seek you
serve you
strengthen you
as the Living Presence in every presence.
Clear our heart, O God,
that we may see.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Reading from “Becoming the Temple the Lateran Symbolizes …” by Fr. Roger J. Landry: Lucia
Peter gave the Church’s architectural plans in his first letter: “Come to [Christ], a living stone, rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” Jesus Christ himself is the foundation of the Church, the cornerstone. The Church is the spiritual house built of living stones on this foundation. And these living stones are those who build their lives on Christ. The saints are those who are solidly built on Christ. The Church is made of men not marble, of women not wood, of boys not bricks, of girls not glass. To celebrate the Feast of the Lateran is to recommit ourselves as living stones, building our existence on Christ.

All the communions of a life-time are one communion.
All the communions of all persons now living are one communion.
All the communions of all persons, present, past and future, are one communion.
Verses (Alternating Voices):Linda and Marita
The whole life lies in the verb seeing … The world, this palpable world, which we were wont to treat with the boredom and disrespect with which we habitually regard places with no sacred association for us, is in truth a holy place, and we did not know it.
By virtue of Creation, and still more the Incarnation, nothing here below is profane for those who know how to see.
We are not physical beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a physical experience.
We are one, after all, you and I … together we exist and forever will recreate one another.
Remain true to yourself, but move ever upward toward greater consciousness and greater love! At the summit you will find yourselves united with all those who, from every direction, have made the same ascent. For everything that rises must converge.
Love is the affinity of being with being.
Love alone is capable of uniting living beings in such a way as to complete and fulfill us, for it alone takes us and joins us by what is deepest in ourselves.
Our duty, as persons, is to proceed as if limits to our ability did not exist. We are collaborators in creation.
Do not forget that the value and interest of life is not so much to do conspicuous things...as to do ordinary things with the perception of their enormous value.

A reading of excerpts from St. Paul’s letters to the Corinthians, Romans and Ephesians: Gina
Brothers and sisters: You are God’s building. Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? We were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. … we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. The whole body, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

A reading from the Holy Gospel John 2: 13-22 Margaret
Since it was almost the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the Temple, he found people selling cattle, sheep and pigeons, while moneychangers sat at their counters. Making a whip out of cords, Jesus drove them all out of the Temple—even the cattle and sheep—and overturned the tables of the money changers, scattering their coins. Then he faced the pigeon sellers: “Take all this out of here! Stop turning God’s house into a market!” The disciples remembered the words of scripture: “Zeal for your house consumes me.” The Temple authorities intervened and said, “What sign can you show us to justify what you’ve done?” Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” They retorted, “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you’re going to raise it up in three days?” But the temple he was speaking of was his body. It was only after Jesus had been raised from the dead that the disciples remembered this statement and believed the scripture—and the words that Jesus had spoken.
The Good News of Salvation Glory and praise to our Savior Jesus the Christ!
Homily: Galen
Statement of Faith: Rita alternate with John
We believe in the Holy One, a divine mystery
beyond all definition and rational understanding,
the heart of all that has ever existed,
that exists now, or that ever will exist.
We believe in Jesus, messenger of the Divine Word,
bringer of healing, heart of Divine compassion,
bright star in the firmament of the Holy One's
prophets, mystics, and saints.
We believe that We are called to follow Jesus
as a vehicle of divine love,
a source of wisdom and truth,
and an instrument of peace in the world.
We believe in the Spirit of the Holy One,
the life that is our innermost life,
the breath moving in our being,
the depth living in each of us.
We believe that the Divine kin-dom is here and now,
stretched out all around us for those
with eyes to see it, hearts to receive it,
and hands to make it happen.
Prayer of the Community: Nick

We pray for these and all unspoken prayers in our hearts. Amen.
SIGN OF PEACE: Barbara
Eternal wellspring of peace-
May we be drenched with the longing for peace
That we may give ourselves over
As the earth to the rain, to the dew,
Until peace overflows our lives
As living waters overflow the seas. (Marcia Falk)
Jesus said to his disciples, “My peace I leave you. My peace I give you.” Let us now extend a sign of peace to one another as we say, Shalom, Peace be with you.

Please extend your hands in blessing over your bread and wine.

We thank you for Jesus, simple servant, lifting up the lowly, revealing you as God-With-Us, revealing us as one with you, and all creation.
On the night before he died, Jesus gathered for supper with the people closest to him. Like the least of household servants, he washed their feet. Once again he showed us how to love one another.
lift bread.
All: Back at the table, Jesus took the bread, spoke the grace, broke the bread and offered it to them saying,
ALL: Take, eat, share, this is my body given up for you to love one another.
lift the cup
Then Jesus took the cup of blessing, spoke the grace, and offered it to them saying:
ALL: Take and drink of the covenant
Made new again through my life in you.
Whenever you remember me like this,
I am among you.
Karen: Bread and wine is transformed by Your Spirit and we are transformed when we open ourselves to Your Spirit. Every time we share this bread and wine we choose to be transformed. We choose to love as You love us.
Jay Cee: As we celebrate and recognize You in this bread and wine we love and recognize you in each other. Please receive communion with the words:

Post Communion Prayer:
Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
Penny: Christ has died. Christ is risen. The Divine Presence lives in us and through us in the world today.
Cathy P. Jesus is always moving within us and working through us. Like Jesus, we will open up wide all that has been closed about us, and we will live compassionate lives, for it is through living as Jesus lived, that we awaken to your Spirit within, moving us to be one with you, O Holy One, at this time and all ways. Amen.
Let us pray together the prayer of Jesus: Gerry
O Holy One, who is within, around, and among us, we celebrate your many names. Your wisdom come. Your will be done, unfolding from the depths within us. Each day you give us all that we need. You remind us of our limits, and we let go. You support us in our power, and we act with courage. For you are the dwelling place within us, the empowerment around us, and the celebration among us, now and forever. Amen.
by Miriam Therese Winter
