Welcome  Gina

Today is traditionally known as the Sunday we celebrate the baptism of Jesus. Jesus began his ministry through a public act of both courage and humility. As we reflect on the example of Jesus’s Tteachings, it can inspire us to be willing to step into our calling with courage and faith.

Opening Song   Come to the Water

Nick: In the name of God our Creator, brother Jesus, and Wisdom Sophia.R] Amen.

Nick: May the God of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love be with each one of you.

R] And with your Spirit.

Opening Prayer: Nick

May we join into this celebration with joy.  May we be led in peace.  May the Holy Spirit descend upon us and we too hear God calling us God’s Beloved. Let us find a quiet space within us as we observe the circumstances of Jesus’ baptism and the beginning of his ministry. Let us open our hearts and ears to hear whatever God’s call is for us. R} Amen

First reading  Barbara  (Is.42: 1-4; 6-7)

A reading from the second book of Isaiah

“Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one, in whom I delight!

I have endowed you with my Spirit that you may bring true justice to the nations. You do not cry out or raise your voice or make yourself heard in the street.  So gentle that you do not break a bruised reed or quench a wavering flame. Faithfully you will bring forth true justice. You will neither waver nor be crushed until justice is established on earth,

YHWH, have called you to serve the cause of right; I have taken you by the hand, and I watch over you. I have appointed you to be a covenant people, a light to the nations: to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison, and those who sit in darkness from the dungeon.

The word of our God. R] Thanks be to God

Responsorial psalm  (vs. Dave)

R. Give God the glory that God’s name deserves!

1 Give glory to YHWH, you heavenly court, give YHWH glory and strength!  Give forth the glory that God’s Name deserves, and worship YHWH in the splendor of holiness!

2. The voice of YHWH resounds over the waters; the God of glory thunders over the raging seas. God’s voice is powerful, God’s voice is full of majesty.

Second Reading Acts Lucia

Peter said to them, “I begin to see how true it is that God shows no partiality— rather, that any person of any nationality who fears God and does what is right is acceptable to God. This is the message God has sent to the people of Israel, the Good News of peace proclaimed through Jesus Christ, who is Savior of all. “You yourselves know what took place throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee with the baptism John proclaimed. You know how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the holy spirit and with power, and how Jesus went about doing good works and healing all who were in the grip of the devil, because God was with him.

The word of our God. R] Thanks be to God

Alleluia

Gospel  Nick

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. John tried to dissuade Jesus, saying, “I should be baptized by you, and yet you come to me!” 15 But Jesus replied, “Leave it this way for now. we must do this to completely fulfill God’s justice.” so John reluctantly agreed. Immediately after Jesus had been baptized and was coming up out of the water, the sky suddenly opened up and Jesus saw the spirit of God descending as a dove and hovering over him. With that, a voice from the heavens said, “This is my own, my beloved, on whom my favor rests.”

The Good News of Jesus the Christ. R: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Statement of Faith     Kathy N

We believe in the Holy One, a divine mystery
beyond all definition and rational understanding,
the heart of all that has ever existed,
that exists now, or that ever will exist.

We believe in Jesus, messenger of the Divine Word,
bringer of healing, heart of Divine compassion,
bright star in the firmament of the Holy One's
prophets, mystics, and saints.

We believe that We are called to follow Jesus
as a vehicle of divine love,
a source of wisdom and truth,
and an instrument of peace in the world.

We believe in the Spirit of the Holy One,
the life that is our innermost life,
the breath moving in our being,
the depth living in each of us.

We believe that the Divine kin-dom is here and now,
stretched out all around us for those
with eyes to see it, hearts to receive it,
and hands to make it happen.

Prayers of the Community   Karla

: As we prepare for the sacred meal we bring to this table our blessings, cares and concerns.  Please feel free to voice your concerns beginning with the words “I bring to the table….”

:  We pray for these and all unspoken concerns. Amen.

Exchange peace:  Juanita

: Eternal wellspring of peace- May we be drenched with the longing for peace

That we may give ourselves over

As the earth to the rain, to the dew,

Until peace overflows our lives

As living waters overflow the seas.  (Marcia Falk)

Jesus said to his disciples, “My peace I leave you.  My peace I give you.”  Let us now extend a sign of peace to one another as we say, Shalom, peace be with you.

Let us offer each other a sign of peace.

Offertory

John: Blessed are you, God of all creation! Through your goodness we have this bread to offer. Fruit of the Earth, work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life.

     R] Blessed be God forever

Gina: Blessed are you, God of all creation! Through your goodness we have this wine to offer. Fruit of the vine, work of human hands, it will become for us the cup of life.

     R] Blessed be God forever

Nick: Pray sisters and brothers that our offering may be acceptable to our loving God.

R] May God accept this offering from our hands for the praise and glory of God’s name. For our Good and the good of all God’s holy people.

Eucharistic prayer

Nick With open hearts and hands let us pray our Eucharistic prayer in one voice:

Cathy W: O Great Love, thank you for living and loving in us and through us as we set our hearts on belonging to you. May all that we do flow from our deep connection with you and all creation.

John: You know our limitations and our essential goodness and you love us as we are. You beckon us to your compassionate heart and inspire us to see the good in others and forgive their limitations. Acknowledging your presence in each other and in all of creation, we sing:

Holy, Holy

MaDonna: Guiding Spirit, when opposing forces in us tug and pull and we are caught in the tension of choices, inspire us to make wise decisions toward what is good.

We thank you for our brother, Jesus, and for all our sisters and brothers who have modeled for us a way to live and love in challenging times. Inspired by them, we choose life over death, we choose to be light in dark times.

Penny: Please extend your hands in blessing.

We are ever aware of your Spirit in us and among us at this Eucharistic table and we are grateful for this bread and wine which reminds us of our call to be the body of Christ in the world.

Nick: On the night before he faced his own death, Jesus sat at supper with his companions and friends.  He reminded them of all that he taught them, and to fix that memory clearly with them, he bent down and washed their feet.

When he returned to his place at the table, he lifted the bread, spoke the blessing, broke the bread and offered it to them saying:

All: Take and eat, this is my body.

(Lift cup)

Nick: Then he took the cup of the covenant, spoke the grace, and offered it to them saying:

All: Take and drink. This is the cup of the new and everlasting covenant. Do this in remembrance of me.

R] We share this bread and cup to proclaim and live the gospel of justice and peace.

Patti: Holy One, your transforming energy is within us and we join our hearts with all who are working for a just world.  We pray for wise leaders in our religious communities. We pray for courageous and compassionate leaders in our world communities.

Jay Cee: We pray for all of us gathered here and like Jesus, we open ourselves up to your Spirit, for it is through living as he lived that we awaken to your Spirit within,

moving us to glorify you, at this time and all ways.  Amen.

Our Father: Pat

Let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us:

O Holy one who is within, around and among us.

We celebrate your many names.

Your wisdom come; your will be done,

unfolding from the depths within us.

Each day you give us all that we need.

You remind us of our limits and we let go.

You support us in our power, and we act with courage.

For you are the dwelling place within us,

the empowerment around us,

and the celebration among us,

now and forever, Amen.

Adapted by Miriam Therese Winter

Nick: Behold, this is Jesus, who loves us as we are and walks with us each day of our lives. How blessed are we who are called to his table.

R] Jesus, you make us worthy to receive you, by your word we are healed.

Communion song   We are many parts

Closing prayer

Chrys: May we always realize your presence in our midst, O Risen Lord, as we prepare to go forth and do the work you have entrusted to us: to teach others your Gospel of justice and forgiveness by the example of our lives. May we reveal to the world your compassion in our midst, working all things to good.  R] Amen

Blessing  Nick

May we come to know the reflection of the Divine in ourselves and in our global family. May we nurture and grow the Divine seed in ourselves so that love, steadfast kindness, and wisdom will find a home in all human hearts.  Amen!
