Greetings

Presider  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Sophia. Amen.

Penitential Act   Juanita

Lord Jesus, you came to gather the nations into the peace of God’s kingdom:   R: Lord, have mercy.
Lord Jesus, you come in word and sacrament to strengthen us in holiness:   R: Christ, have mercy.
Lord Jesus, you will come in glory with salvation for your people: R: Lord, have mercy.

May the God of mercy forgive us, heal us, and guide us into fuller life.

Amen.

Introduction to Liturgy  Linda

We gather today at the threshold of Lent, a season of truth-telling and transformation.

The Spirit leads Jesus—and leads us—into the desert, not to punish us, but to clarify what matters most.

This is a season to resist voices that distort God’s goodness, to confront systems that diminish life, and to choose the path of justice, compassion, and faithful love again.

Liturgy of the Word

First Reading – Genesis 2:7; 3:1–7      Pat

This ancient story speaks of desire, deception, and the human longing for wisdom—and of how fear and blame fracture right relationship with God, with one another, and with the earth.

First Reading: Genesis 2:7 — 3:1-7

A reading from the book of Genesis.

YHWH fashioned an earth creature out of the clay of the earth and blew into its nostrils the breath of life, and so the earth creature became a living being. YHWH planted a garden in Eden, which is in the east, and placed in it the earth creature which  God had formed.  Then YHWH caused to spring up from the soil every kind of tree, enticing to look at and good to eat, with the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the middle of the garden. Now the serpent was more cunning than any of the animals of the field that YHWH had made.  It  asked  the  woman,  “Did YHWH really tell you not to eat from any of the  trees  in  the  garden?”  The woman answered the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees in the garden. But of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, YHWH said, ‘Do not eat it or touch it, or you will die.’ ” But the serpent said to the woman, “No! You will not die! God knows well that on the day you eat it, your eyes will be  opened, and  you  will  be  like  gods, knowing good and evil.” The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eye, and desirable for the knowledge it could give. So, she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some to the man with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they realized that they were naked. So, they sewed fig leaves together to make loincloths for themselves.

The Word of God.   R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 51  Verses  Melissa

Responder: Be merciful, O God, and restore us to wholeness.

Have mercy on us, O God, in Your goodness, in Your great tenderness, wipe away our faults; wash us clean of guilt, / purify us from my sin.

R: Be merciful, O God, and restore us to wholeness

For we are well aware of our faults, / we have our sins constantly in mind. Having sinned against none other than You, / having done what You regard as wrong.

R: Be merciful, O God, and restore us to wholeness

God, create a clean heart in us, / put into us a new and constant spirit, Do not banish us from Your presence, / do not deprive us of Your Holy Spirit.

R: Be merciful, O God, and restore us to wholeness.

Second Reading – Romans 5:12–19   John

Paul contrasts the harm that flows from domination and disobedience with the grace that comes through faithful, self-giving love.

A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans.

Therefore, sin entered the world through the first humans, and through sin, death, and in this way, death has spread through the whole human race, because all have sinned. Sin existed in the world long before the Law was given, even though it is not called “sin” when there is no law. Yet death reigned over all who lived from our first parents until Moses, even though their sin — unlike that of our first parents— was not a matter of breaking a law.  But the gift is not like the offense. For if by the offense of one couple all died, how much more did the grace of God — and the gracious gift of the One Jesus Christ —abound for all! The gift that came to us is not at all like what comes through those who sinned. In one case, the sentence followed upon one offense and brought condemnation; in the other, the gift came after many offenses and brought complete acquittal. If death began its reign through one person because of an offense, much more will those who receive the overflowing grace and gift of justice live and reign through the One Jesus Christ. To sum up, then: just as a single offense brought condemnation to all, a single righteous act brought all acquittal and life. Just as through one person’s disobedience, all became sinners, so through one person’s obedience, all will become just.

The Word of God.  R. Thanks be to God.

Gospel – Matthew 4:1–11  Margaret

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Then Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit, to be tempted by the Devil. After fasting for forty days and forty nights, Jesus was hungry. The tempter approached and said, “If you are the Only Begotten, command these stones to turn into bread.” Jesus replied, “Scripture has it, ‘We live not on bread alone, but on every utterance that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” Next, the Devil took Jesus to the Holy City, set him on the parapet of the Temple, and said, 'If you are the Only Begotten, throw yourself down. Scripture has it, ‘God will tell the angels to take care of you; with their hands they will support you that you may never stumble on a stone.’ “Jesus answered, “Scripture also says, ‘Do not put God to the test.’ ” The Devil then took Jesus up a very high mountain and displayed all the dominions of the world in their magnificence, promising, 'All these will I give you if you fall down and worship me.” At this, Jesus said to the Devil, “Away with you, Satan! Scripture says, ‘You will worship the Most High God; God alone will you adore.’ ” At that, the Devil left, and angels came and attended Jesus.

Sign of Peace:  Penny

As we prepare this sacred meal, we reaffirm that just as Jesus was anointed, so are we. And so, we celebrate our Creator’s fruitful love as we extend our blessing to one another with joy. May the peace that our brother Jesus offers be always with us!  Please offer each other the sign of peace.

Prayers of the Faithful  Dave  and Lucia Alternate Verses

Trusting in the God who calls us toward justice, healing, and life, let us pray for the needs of our world.

For the Church, that it may be a voice of courage—resisting injustice, honoring women’s leadership, and standing with those who are marginalized,

R: We pray to the Holy Ones.

For all who are tempted by power, fear, or indifference, especially leaders of nations and institutions, that they may choose compassion over control and service over self-interest,

R: We pray to the Holy Ones.

For women and girls whose dignity is denied through violence, poverty, or exclusion, that they may be protected, empowered, and fully recognized as bearers of God’s image,

R: We pray to the Holy Ones.

For those who hunger for food, for dignity, for belonging, that our community may respond with generosity, advocacy, and action,

R: We pray to the Holy Ones.

For our parish community, this Lenten season may deepen our commitment to prayer, justice, and right relationship with all creation,

R: We pray to the Holy Ones.

For those who have died, especially those whose lives were marked by struggle, that they may rest in the fullness of God’s mercy and peace,

R: We pray to the Holy Ones.

Who or what would you like to pray for today?

Presider:

Loving God, you hear the cries of your people and walk with us in the desert places of life. Receive these prayers and shape us into a community of justice and hope. Amen.

Please extend your hands over your bread and wine.

Presider: May Sophia Wisdom be recognized in the gifts of this Eucharistic Table as we celebrate the transformative power within this bread and wine. Send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts of bread and wine to change them into the body + and blood of Jesus the Christ.

At this gathering, we take bread, as Jesus took bread, and we remember, as Jesus remembered, the constant presence of the Spirit of Life and Love. And Jesus offers it to us now, saying:

(All raise your bread)

Take and eat, all of you. This is my Body, the Bread of Life, which I give to strengthen you.

ALL: Take and eat this bread of everlasting Life, the life force of the everlasting Covenant made new again through my life in you. Whenever you remember me like this, I am among you.

(All raise your cup of wine)

Jesus then raised a cup of blessing, spoke the grace, and offered it to us now, saying

ALL: Take and drink this Cup of Life, the life force of the everlasting Covenant made new again through my life in you. Whenever you remember me like this, I am among you.

We give thanks for who we are in Christ:

Please receive communion with the words: There is always enough love..

The Lord’s Prayer

Chrys The Lord's Prayer by J Philip Newell

Ground of all being,

Mother of life, Father of the universe,

Your name is sacred, beyond speaking.

May we know your presence, may your longings be our longings in heart and in action.

May there be food for the human family today and for the whole earth community.

Forgive us the falseness of what we have done, as we forgive those who are untrue to us.

Do not forsake us in our time of conflict, but lead us into new beginnings.

For the light of life, the vitality of life, and the glory of life are yours now and forever.

Amen.

Prayer after Communion

Nick As we enter the first week of our Lenten journey, guide us to the path that leads to you. Fill our hearts with gratitude, patience, strength, and peace as we strive to become the best version of ourselves. Let us hear your voice in the deepest reaches of our souls. Give us rest in you. Help us accept others, showing them your great love rather than casting judgment. Stay with us through the busy days this week and remind us that when we need comfort, solitude, wisdom, or guidance, we can always turn to you.

Concluding Rites

Blessing Presider

May God, who creates and sustains all life, bless you.

May Christ, who walks with us through the desert, strengthen you.

May the Spirit, who renews the face of the earth, guide you in hope.

And may almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Sophia.

Amen.

Dismissal  Margaret

Go in peace, to love fiercely, to resist injustice, and to choose life. Thanks be to God.
